You purchased a new LED monitor for your computer

You recently purchased a new led monitor for your computer. Maybe you did not realize some of the specs that the monitor had or offered. Maybe you have some doubts on the quality of the monitor. Well, you are in luck! Today, our researchers spent countless hours going over what are the most important specs for your newly purchased LED monitor.

Things you should consider for your new computer monitors:

  • Screen size
  • Type of monitor: LED and LCD monitors
  • Panel type
  • Refresh rate
  • Response time
  • Port type or video ports
  • Aspect ratio

Screen size

The average computer monitor screen size is 24 inches. You can get a computer monitor as large as 49 inches or as small as 15 inches. It just depends on your wants and needs for your computer monitor. You can also get dual monitors to make your work more efficient.

If you want to be able to tell how large your monitor, you can look at the back of the monitor to tell.

Type of monitor: LED and LCD Monitors

LED monitors and LCD monitors are similar, but you can see the differences here.

The LED monitor is a digital monitor, while a CRT or cathode ray tube monitor is a analog monitor.

Panel Type

There are three different types of panel types.

VA panels, IPS panels, and TN panels.

VA panels: VA panels have liquid crystals in the computer screen. The liquid crystals become parallel to the glass of the computer monitor when there is electrical pressure.

IPS panels: Similar to VA panels, IPS panels have liquid crystals in the computer screen. Most monitors have either VA panels or IPS panels.

TN panels: Even though they are worse of the three, they help make the monitor have the fastest refresh rate. Most likely in your new monitor, it would not have TN panels.

Refresh rate

Ideally the new led monitor you purchased was at least 60 Hz or higher. However, if it is less than that it is fine unless you are using your monitor as a gaming monitor.

Response time

You want the response time of your new monitor to be less than 5 ms.

Ports or cable connectors (monitor cables)

There are 4 different main type of cable connectors.

  • DVI cables
  • VGA port
  • HDMI ports and HDMI cables
  • Displayport cable connectors

DVI cable is a digital visual interface cable that connects a video source device to a display device. In the case of a monitor, it will connect through the back of the monitor. It moves analog and digital video data. The DVI was meant to replace VGA port and cable.

The VGA ports were the standard interface for analog signals of video or for an analog monitor. No new monitor use VGA cables anymore. New monitors mainly use HDMI ports or displayport cable and not VGA ports.

HDMI port is the high definition multimedia interface. It helps transmit digital audio and visual from a computer to a digital monitor.

Aspect ratio

The aspect ratio is the relationship between the width and the height of a monitor or a laptop computer. A 16:9 aspect ratio means the width of the monitor is 16 rectangular units and the height of the monitor is 9 rectangular units.

External storage device

External storage device: three types

  • HDD (hard disk drive)
  • SSD (solid-state drive)
  • SSHD (solid-state hybrid drive)

A hard disk drive (HDD) is the original hard drive. It stores the data on a platter covered with a magnetic material. The drive retrieves the digital date using the storage with the platters rotating.

The new external storage device is called a solid-state device (SSD). It uses an integrated circuit to store data and uses flash memory (retains data without a power supply). They have lower latency and higher input/output rates compared to HDD. Physically, a solid-state drive is more compact.

A solid-state hybrid drive (SSHD) combines a HDD and SSD into one external storage device. It combines a faster storage device like a SSD with a larger storage device like a HDD.
