There are so many different specs that are and are not important factors for computer monitors. You might have no idea what matters and what does not matter for computer monitors. Well, today is your lucky day, since our experts have done hours of research on the topic, so you do not have to! We go over the factors that do not matter and do matter when buying a new monitor.
Color depth for new monitor
The color depth is the number of bits (the basic unit of information in computing) to indicate the color of a single pixel. The bit depth dictates the number of colors that can be seen at one time.
The bit depth goes from 1 to 32. The more depth the more potential colors. Video games mainly use a bit depth of 32.
Things that factor in buying a new monitor
These are the factors that you should look into when buying a new monitor.
- screen size
- flat vs curved monitors
- aspect ratio
- refresh rate
- panel type
- response time
- resolution
- ports
Computer monitors
Screen size
The usual computer monitor screen size is from 13 to 49 inches in diagonal measurement. You can always look up the size of most monitors online, if you know the type of computer monitor.
Flat vs curved monitors
Reasons why people buy flat screen monitors:
- wall mounting
- viewing distance
- Dual monitor or two computer monitors
- IPS panels
Reasons why people buy curved screen monitors:
- aspect ratio
- viewing angles
- image quality
- VA panels
- gaming monitors
Aspect ratio
Aspect ratio is the relationship between the width and the height of a monitor. It is measure in rectangular units. For example, 16:9 means a width of 16 rectangular units and height of 9 rectangular units.
Refresh rate
The refresh rate is the number of times per second your display draws a new image. The refresh rate is measured in hertz (Hz).
The refresh rate for gaming monitors is typically 144 Hz.
Response time
Response time is the time it takes the system to react to a given input.
Resolution
The display resolution is the number of pixels that can be displayed.
Ports
- USB-C
- HDMI
- Displayport
- Lightning

LCD monitors
LCD monitors have two pieces of glass that holds the liquid between the glass to form the screen.
LCD monitors are light in weight and good for visual displays and image quality.
The image quality matters much more for LCD monitors than the screen size.
IPS monitors
IPS monitors have liquid crystals in the computer monitor. IPS panels are horizontal and parallel to the glass plates of the computer screen. When electrical pressure occurs, the liquid crystals rotate 90 degrees.
Other panel types
VA panels
VA panels have liquid crystals in the computer monitor. The liquid crystals are vertical when there is no electrical pressure. However, when there is electrical pressure, the liquid crystals become parallel to the glass plates of the computer screen.
TN panels
TN panels help make the refresh rate of the computer monitor the fastest of all three panel types, but they can have poor color accuracy. They are inexpensive compared to the other two panel types. Gaming monitors use TN monitors, if they don’t use IPS monitors.
