Parts of a computer monitor

You might have used a computer monitor before and pondered what are the components of a computer monitor? Well, we have got you covered! Our experts spent countless hours looking over computer monitor parts and in this article we go over a particular monitor and its parts. Keep me in mind the inside of most monitors are relatively the same. There can be differences based on the company that made the monitor or the type of monitor.

What is a computer monitor?

It is an output device that displays graphics and text to the user. You can use the computer monitor screen for a plethora of reasons. You can use it for work and entertainment.

Parts of monitor for a Liquid Crystal display or LCD monitor

For this article, we will dissect the Dell 27 monitor – P2723D

We know that the purpose of a computer monitor screen is to display images of the computer through the graphics processor or card.

Basic information on the modern monitor

It is a 27 inch LCD monitor with a IPS panel type. The aspect ratio is 16:9 and a resolution as high as 2560 columns x 1440 rows at 60 Hz. It supports over 16.7 million different colors and weighs 14.9 lbs. It has a vesa mounting interface. This monitor can be used for wall mounts if you do not want to use a monitor stand.

The computer monitor screen

The Dell 27 monitor P2723D screen is made up of thin film transistor with LED backlighting. The backlight of the LCD screen provides visibility to you and you can change the brightness within the settings of the computer monitor screen.

The thin film transistor of the backlight uses electric field to control the flow of the current in a semiconductor and it is thin relatively to the whole monitor.

The computer monitor will come with a glossy screen that helps increase sharpness and color saturation. The frame that surrounds and protects the lcd screen from damage is called the bezel. The glass that makes the screen durable is called the layered glass.

Usually, a thin piece of plastic separates the two pieces of glass or layered glass, so the monitor can be not so heavy in weight. The computer monitor usually has a flat panel display.

Computer monitors connectivity options

It has a displayport, HDMI port, USB 3.2 Gen 1, and 4 USB3.2 ports (USB port).

It also includes a security lock slot, a stand lock, and a power connector that holds the power supply. Similar to most computer monitors, when buying this computer monitor, it will come with a power connector so you will have a plug for the power supply port.

In a previous article, we discuss the differences between all the cables and ports talked about above.

Above the connectivity options is the Vesa mounting interface.

The monitor stand

You can either mount the computer monitor or you can use the monitor stand that it comes with. Depending on your situation, you might have to buy a computer monitor mount or just use what the monitor has.

Parts of monitor inside the liquid crystal display monitor or monitor screen

You have the LCD panel and when you move that you have the circuit board. Within the LCD panel, you’ll have a chip or semiconductor in the middle that will take the video output and activate the resolution in the panel.

Amplifier circuit

The amplifier circuit strengthens the video signals that go onto the computer monitor. More specifically, the amplifier circuit changes the brightness and contrast of the computer monitor.

Reflectors and light source

The reflectors and light sources of the computer monitor use a beam of light to project the input to the output or the monitor screen.

Interface board

The interface board connects the computer to the monitor internally and display images. It is really a circuit board but the fancier term people use is interface board.

Before the LCD monitors, the most popular monitor was a Cathode ray tube

Initially, CRT monitors were one of the first computer monitors and they only had monochrome displays. Eventually, cathode ray tube monitors integrated colors into the screens. The best resolution for the cathode ray tube is 1024 x 768 pixels. Cathode ray tube monitors tend to be obsolete but you can still buy them on second hand markets.

Similarities and Differences between CRT monitors and LCD monitors

Compared to LCD monitors physically, cathode ray tubes monitors are heavier, bulkier, and more cumbersome. The computer monitors also consume a higher power supply than LCD monitors. CRT screens use a electron gun to form images.

Liquid crystal displays monitors are typically more expensive than CRT monitors. The LCD monitors have much better display technology than cathode tube ray monitors, since they have the lcd technology. LCD monitors consume low power.

Physically, LCD displays screens are light, thin in size, and compact. Many monitors have faster response time and fresh rates than CRT screens . The picture elements or resolution on a display screen of a LCD monitor is much better than a CRT monitor.

Even though plasma display panel came after CRT monitors, they are now considered less useful in computer monitors, since LCD screens displaced them.

Both computer monitors have a power connector. They also have a computer’s video card or GPU. You will need an active displayport to a VGA converter to connect to your CRT monitor.

Recap

For LCD monitors and CRT monitors there are multiple parts of the computer monitors. They have the computer screen and computer connectivity options that can have an output device.

LCD monitors have multiple ports so they can use displayport cables, USB cables, HDMI cables, and a power cord or connector. Both type of computer monitors will have a monitor stand. Inside of the lcd screens, they have an amplifier circuit, reflectors and light sources, and interface board.

Other computer monitor types are LED monitors, OLED monitors, and touch screen monitors.
